Written Response Items Available You can request these materials using the on-line order form or by calling your site director .MDTP is continuing to work on written response items. Each item goes through the same development process as MDTP tests. It is written, reviewed, field-tested, revised, and field-tested again before being released to you. MDTP now has a 3-ring binder with written response materials available for teachers. The notebook includes suggested uses, a general rubric, and auxiliary materials. There are a variety of items available at the Algebra Readiness, Geometry Readiness, Second-Year Algebra Readiness, and Mathematical Analysis Readiness levels. These items come ready for photocopying and use in your classroom. For each item you'll find: a copy of the item for reproduction and distribution to your students, an instructor's supplement page, containing additional information about the question and ideas for classroom extensions of the question; the MDTP generalized scoring rubric applicable to all MDTP written response questions; and the specialized scoring rubric created specifically for that particular question. The MDTP General Scoring Rubric should be used as a guide to scoring any of our written response items. We hope it will be useful to you in the evaluation of other written mathematics work of your students. It is a "holistic" scoring scheme developed to help assure that components of the scoring process include mathematical content and techniques as well as effectiveness of communication. The creation, field testing, and distribution of these items is part of MDTP's ongoing effort to assist mathematics teachers. We hope these problems will enrich the curriculum by providing additional instructional opportunities and that these items will stimulate instruction-this, rather than assessment alone, is their primary purpose. They are examples of ways to use written work for diagnostic assessment that can build understanding for individual students and for groups of students. Call for Field-Testers for Written Response Items The MDTP has prepared items at the Geometry, Second-Year Algebra Readiness level and the Math Analysis Readiness level and we need your help to field-test these items. Field-testing a written response item requires the teacher to: (1) Give the item as an in-class activity of not more than one class period, (2) Score the class results using the general and specific rubrics provided, and (3) Fill out a short evaluation form that reflects your experience with the item.If you or a colleague would be interested in field-testing one of these items, please notify your site director as soon as possible.
