J Sarli's field of specialization is groups of Lie type. As a member of generation of post-classification group theorists, he is particularly interested in how these groups manifest themselves as automorphisms of geometrical systems associated with algebraic groups. He has published three lengthy papers on the geometry of the exceptional family of 2F4 type groups, one of them co-authored by E.T. Migliore of Monterey Peninsula College. These groups have been the subject of numerous conjectures in the area of algebraic groups since their discovery in 1960 and Sarli has settled some of these constructively. Recently he has applied group theory to the equations of linear elasticity. With Javier Torner of the physics department at CSUSB he has authored work that realizes the addition of a harmonic field to a solution of the equilibrium equation as a unitary action on a group algebra.
