TeX for MS Windows
The most popular free TeX for MS Windows is MiKTeX. This package includes binaries to compile TeX and LaTex, a previewer (YAP), dvips (to generate postscript), and many other standard TeX tools. The complete package also includes all the fonts, tfm files, LaTeX macros and such. Installation is by InstallShield (the installation method used by most commercial programs).MiKTex is available from:
In addition to MiKTex, you will probably want a Windows TeX environment.
These environments provide an editor which can call the appropriate MiKTeX
programs (tex, latex, previewer, etc.). Choices here include:
- windedt: WindEDT Home Page or CTAN (Shareware)
- TeXnicCenter Home page Page or CTAN Open Source (free!)
- Scientific Word Macichan Software (Commercial Software)
- emacs
- texshell
- a standard windows text editor, such as notepad. However, the capacity of notepad is quite limited. Other windows editors and word processors will usually produce non-ascii files which are unsuitable for TeX.
